Education and Continuing Education

1- A joint committee has been formed from Jordanian Nursing Council and The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research to solve some obstacles concerning nursing education. One of the top issues was the male /female students ratio at the Jordanian Universities, based on the joint committee's recommendations; the Higher Education Council determined the ratio to be 70%:30% for the year 2008/2009 (Decision no. (6/2008) in May 4, 2008).

2- The first "Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing" training course was concluded on 4/3/2008. The course was jointly carried out with University of Jordan and the support of the Hashemite University. 

A group of nursing from Ministry of Health and Royal Medical Services attended the nine months training course. The main goals of this course were to develop model units for patient care and for training of nurses, and to build needed capacity and capability of the nurses for the service and education sectors in the field of psychiatric-mental health nursing.  Additional goal of the course was to develop a psychiatric unit that satisfy the requirements of nursing standards of care and nursing curricula at the Jordanian Nursing Council criteria (standards) for training placements. 

The Second "Psychiatric and Mental Health" course has been started in December, 14, 2008.

3- A "Primary Mental Health Course" was conducted during the period form 31/8/2008 to 30/11/2008, in collaboration with the World Health Organization.

 The Three months course aimed at providing practices nurses with the knowledge and the skills necessary for individuals and groups in Jordan especially the Iraqi refugees who suffer from different psychiatric problems precipitated by crisis situation back home. 

Twenty participants were chosen from MOH primary health centers including three governorates; Amman, Al-Balqa and Irbid. The clinical training was conducted in two specific MOH primary health centers. The course was facilitated by a number of faculty members from JNC, University of Jordan and Hashemite University.

4- Concluding the 1st "Leadership for Change program"  on 9/10/2008, which was conducted in collaboration with Ministry of Health, funded by the World Health Organization/EMRO and executed by the International Council of Nursing.

The two years program aimed at strengthening the capacity for nursing leadership and management in Jordan in health services including influencing policy and health system improvements, quality management, and cost effective models for delivering services.

 Twenty three nurses from Royal Medical Services, Ministry of Health, King Abdullah University Hospital and Specialty Hospital participated in this program.

 A number of the participants were prepared as TOTs to prepare other nurses' with the help of the Jordanian Nursing Council, MOH and WHO.

The International Nursing Council officially designated JNC to execute the Leadership for Change program (LFC) by the ten TOTs and under the supervision of ICN.

5- A Train of Trainers Workshop TOT was conducted in collaboration with the World Health Organization in November 15, 2008; titled "Integrating Emergency Preparedness and Response into Undergraduate Nursing Curricula".

 The four days workshop aimed at providing a training of trainers workshop in order to prepare nursing faculty to develop a curriculum framework and content to teach emergency preparedness and response at the undergraduate level, also it aimed to provide an expert advice to Jordanian nationals to develop learning materials and training packages for implementing disaster and emergency preparedness for nurses and midwives.

 The workshop was attended by 17 faculty members from the different Jordanian universities and was supervised by the two WHO consultants; Dr. Marcel Dubouloz and (Dr) Mary Pat Couig, who had long experience in dealing with disaster situations around the world.
