Research
Age-Friendly Cities
Introduction:
This
methodological protocol for the WHO Global Age-Friendly Cities project.
is the result of discussions with collaborators from most participating
countries. It is called the Vancouver Protocol in recognition of
the generous support of the Government of British Columbia Age
friendly Project
The
purpose of the document is to guide country coordinators in planning the
age friendly project generally to meet its objectives and in
implementing the Focus Group Community Assessment of the Age-Friendly
Cities project.
Objectives:
The
Age-friendly cities project has two main objectives:

Continuing
Education
1-
Leadership for change ( application started since 2006)
•
This course is run by ICN experts in collaboration with the MOH and JNC
•
This
program is an action learning program that allows the time for participant
to absorb and apply the knowledge they gain. It is expected that the
course will develop the nurse's abilities in leadership and management and
prepare them to deal with the changing environment. The program is
implemented over two years period to allow for development of abilities
through hands on experience.

Mentorship for the Advanced role
•
This is an intensive course that will be run over ten days and it aims at
preparing the mentors who are involved in the education of graduate
nursing students. This course will equip the educators with the know how
of transferring their command of the advanced practice roles to the
learner. This program will target (obviously) academicians involved in
clinical education of graduate nursing students. The course will be run in
collaboration with Azusa Pacific University, and is scheduled to be held
in January,2007.

Palliative care
•
This program will include a 3 month course that will introduce the content
of palliative care and the nurse role. The course will be followed by a
hands on experience with the supervision of mentors in palliative care.
•
The program will be held in collaboration with Al-Malath Foundation for
Humanistic care and Al-Hussein Cancer Center.

Disaster preparedness
•
The program primarily aims at nurse participation and contribution in the
country\s disaster plan. It will focus on preparing the nurses and other
professionals in disaster prevention and impact reduction in addition to
relief response.

Gerontology
•
This program will include a theory content course and a" hands
on" experience that will include preparing the environment for the
care of the elderly clients. The initial hands on experience will focus on
the " healthier" older adults and will focus on the preparation
of support services, inclusion and psychosocial care of this population.

Mental Health Nursing
•
This program is a hands on /action learning course. It will allow time and
lengthy process to allow the participants to absorb and apply the
information they acquire, to implement activities and to create the
necessary changes. This program will offer a supportive environment that
will provide opportunities for learning that will clarify the role of the
nurse in- patient psychiatric units/hospitals, and prepares the nurse to
master his role. Specifically, the program aims at restructuring of the
participant units, preparation of staff; developing policies and
procedures, creating the team, and establishing the ground rules for
operating psychiatric units.
•
The course will be offered over nine month period, in five sessions. Each
session is proceeded by intensive workshops and theoretical foundation of
the session topic.
•
Course will be run by local consultants in collaboration with
